You're lucky today!

Low energy is not a phrase you'd use to describe this A-side!  This might be meant as just a demo, but it doesn't stop Rodd and company from pulling out all the stops with a crazy over-the-top arrangement that I'm sure would please Burt Bacharach.  And dig the drummer! Who is THAT guy, that's what I want to know!  Judy Judy Judy Lane is right at Rodd's side, just where we want her. Del Casher (presumably; it sounds like him) on guitar.  The engineer also deserves some credit on this, with all the sudden attacks in dynamics, in lesser hands there could have been distortion.  A total pro-job; the song-poet Bertha Dwinell certainly got her money's worth on this one!

Ah, but after all that excitement, nothing like unwinding with a beautiful b-side, like "This Boy", "Yes It Is", "Deep Feeling" or.....this one, "Sweet Sweet Kisses". Like a cigarette after the sudden orgasm that ends side A, this charming, gentle song features a nice (and catchy) Rodd & Judy chorus. I always put a third harmony part in, whenever this come on, ha! Can't help myself! Again, I think song poet Dorothy Griffin got her money's worth; "Jackie" certainly thought enough of it to write his/her name on the label, lest it got mixed in with someone else's records....not an uncommon problem back in the day!

Goo goo gooo.....ga ga gaa.......

You may like this song, you may not like this song......but few would deny that Joann turns in an outstanding performance as one of the baby-obsessed! It might make you/me cringe, but it is completely successful in what it sets out to do. Adorable.  Eeeew!
The flip-side is a sort of sequel - some might say "rip-off"! - of The Browns' "The Old Lamplighter".  That said, it has its charms.

You take the pretty one.......

The b-side is sweet and kinda poignant, Debbie Davies sounding less like the blueswoman she'd become, and more like she's ready to go sing with the band on the Poseidon Adventure!  Which, in a way, was exactly what she was already doing!  Happy she made it out alive.

Very early Tin Pan Alley

Someone get this to Robbie Robertson....to get to Martin Scorsese!

Always a bonus to have both a celeste AND an organ, especially for this period.

Not that Frank Perry!

I bought this thinking it was our Frank Perry; turns out it wasn't.  But it WAS wacky enough to share with you.  I always say there are not enough songs in pig latin!

LISTEN/DOWNLOAD: SIDE A

<-- gina lollobrigida, and debbie reynolds too...)

 Here's the b-side.

LISTEN/DOWNLOAD: SIDE B

As you can hear, it may not be song-poem Frank (or even a song-poem at all!), but kinda fits in stylistically with our thing, not unlike Cal Andrews' "O Sing To Me" which circulated among S.P. collectors (and which I believe you can find on Bob's blog). (oh what the hell, here's my copy) Maybe because I bought this single thinking it was Film City Frank, and then ended up digitizing it with a batch of Tin Pan Alley and Globe-affilaited 45s, it's almost been like an "honorary song-poem" for me over the years.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want you to spend your money on a record you THOUGHT was a song-poem and turned out wasn't! So I almost put this in the "Don't Waste Your Money" category, even though I enjoy it as a listening experience (in fact, I probably enjoy it more than most Frank Perry song-poem records!)

A quick search yielded this page about Sure Records, although it does not mention this release.

...so maybe you feel like today's post is a gyp, as fun as the above record is, so here's a song-poem for ya....😉

"I just found out....you're not my type!"

The most brutal litany of relationship grievances heard in a song-poem since "You Insulted Me"!

(wasn't that cathartic?!!!)

Of the many poignant song-poems about missing deceased loved ones, this may be the only one written from the perspective of an airplane pilot.

(eskelin does a nice job on these two as well...or should I say as usual!😉)

BOBBY VERNON: TEACH ME A SONG/LOVE CAN BE FOUND (AIR 5013)

Gotta love the intro....that's the way you start a record!

Nothing too wacky, just a nice record (both sides) that would have fit right alongside "The Three Bells" and the latest release from The Fleetwoods!  Released March 1960 (according to ASPMA)

"there's no more blues, I'm as happy as a king........"

Let's celebrate.
On the other hand, there is a bit of this kind of sentiment as well: "I Don't Know Where To Go From Here....."

We want strains with some reserve!

Maybe I'm being harsh, but Vandalia tends to be pretty low on my list of song-poem concerns.  And yet, in these troubled times, I daresay the moment may have finally arrived for one thing, and one thing only:

Mea culpa, Bill!

A PACK O' ARPAIA

We Want Strains With Some Reserve (randall reed)
Here Alone And Just With Me (randall reed)
Wishing We Could Fly (randall reed)
In My Salad Days (damita)
The Flying Flag Forever (william howard arpaia; the babylonians)
Heaven Was Where I Had Been (lance hill)

I don't know about you, but I'm still shell-shocked from what just happened; indeed what's been happening for the last four/twenty/fifty years! Because of this, I still haven't begun to post what I had originally intended to kick off this blog with because various song-poems keep surfacing their ironic selves just as the day-to-day unfolding of history intrudes into my blogging mind!  Consider track number one from this album.  Old man Arpaia had it right, at least for these days: We Want Strains With Some Reserve!  (And this is what I'm always telling people!😆)

Most of this album is pretty bland and (album-cover declarations notwithstanding) rather unmemorable, so much so that when I first digitized it years ago, this is how I labeled the CD:

"Pray You Don't Get Stuck On A Desert Island With Just This Disc!"

That said, I have to admit that the first track, with it's righteous indignation regarding the state of music, makes me grin, smile and laugh; the second two tracks are more tranquil and feature unexpected endings that are pure late-70s nirvana, fleeting moments that sound like Randall Reed and company are showing off what they can really do if they could be but liberated from the "reserved strains" of W.H. Arpaia!

  • Quick side note: other than hitting the spot during this turbulent time in history, the real attraction (for me) on Arpaia albums is the COVERS!  For a good time definitely click on both the front (above) and the back cover (below, bottom of post).  OR you can simply read them at the ole ASPMA!
  • (I actually have another "Arpaia Sound" album - I think it's "Arpaia Sound III" -  but it's sealed. It's got some Sammy & Kris on it.  Is it sacrilegious to unseal? What do you think?)

While you're mulling over that, and speaking of "Kris"....here's a "Damita" (aka Kris Arden, Jo Ann Auborn) single on Vandalia that's pretty disposable.  But just as I was about to turn it off, I heard a random sax bleat that ended up cracking me up every time I listened to it.  I don't know if it's a mistake or if someone is goofing around.....or if it's Arpaia himself, overdubbing his sax onto a Globe demo recording, but I always forget it's coming and it always catches me off-guard. It's just a little sax bleat, out of the blue, and totally inappropriate.  Like an embarrassing instance of musical flatulence or something.

Lastly, here is one of only two known records on which William Howard himself appears as vocalist.  The first is the well-known "Listen Mr. Hat" (featuring his back-up band, The Jerrymanders! Jerrymanders? Et tu, Brute!).  The second is not as wacky - but more pertinent to the day's events, for today is Inauguration Day and, at last, the long national nightmare eases a little bit, if not ends all together!   So strike up the band and let Mr. Arpaia tell you all about it!

Might make you feel patriotic, may make you feel bored....but I guarantee you, for the rest of your days you will be saying "My America......"

PS - Here's the flip, Lance Hill really going over the top.

P.S.S. Don't miss more "Lance Hill Sings Arpaia" over at Bob's blog, the immortal "I'm A Catastrophe", in case you missed it the first time!

Enjoy!

Palm Beach is not the same - Mr. Trump, you're to blame!

Having a bit of deja-vu, song-poem style!

I was just about to upload this (yet again) apropos track, sung by Bobbi Boyle (under the name Barbara Foster), lyrics by Myron Ace,  but then thought to see if it was already on YouTube. Was shocked to find that not only was Myron's song-poem made into a nifty video, but that the song has "made it" into the mainstream!  Look!

https://www.rollcall.com/2014/08/07/roll-call-after-dark-tunes-of-the-week-san-clementes-not-the-same-by-barbara-foster-video/

In the song-poem universe, I call that a hit!  Congratulations, Myron, where ever you may be!

You're a double-dealing dude, and I'll get even with you.....

Another great double-sider that somewhat (and somehow) fits the moment.....

"Would you believe...?" That sure is the sentence-beginner of the month, right?

DOUBLE DEALING DUDE (listen/download)

WOULD YOU BELIEVE (listen/download)

I see Gloria cut "Would You Believe" at least one other time in a jazzier arrangement (thank you, youtube!)

  •  On Discogs there is another "Would You Believe" single attributed to Gloria & Taj Mahal!  I have not heard THAT version!
  • I do, however, have a full album of Tony Graye (on Jody) but I can't remember a thing about it, I'll have to give that one another listen and report back.😉

Lock the windows and close the doors....I've got to stay away from you....

1:45 of gold!

I like the flip also, it captures a particular wistful and resigned feeling I think we've all had at some point in our lives.....maybe even today, January 7, 2021!

LOCK THE WINDOWS (LISTEN/DOWNLOAD)

AWAY FROM YOU (LISTEN/DOWNLOAD)

I wanted to post this yesterday BEFORE the riot of the dipshits in the Capitol building since I knew it was going to be apropos. How prescient I would have appeared! Unfortunately my internet has been incredibly slow and it was not to be.  Not that anyone would have been in the mood for this record anyway!  But today?  Seems even better!   I don't have a scanner right now, but when I do I'm going to replace these label scans, which I got from Discogs.  That said, I had to share the sticker that came on the record, hence this lousy snapshot:

Sure does!

There's currently another Inner-Glo/Chuck Cowan-related track on YouTube

(....and let's not forget to thank Edith!😉)
